New Insights Into Indigenous History Through Food: Thursday 8 March 2018

The fascinating so-far undocumented colonial history of Indigenous food in Cape York Peninsula of north Queensland will unfold under a new, three-year study led by a Flinders University team.

Regional Jobs and Investment Package: Friday 23 February 2018

The Federal Minister for Regional Development, Territories and Local Government, Dr John McVeigh announced the 21 successful projects under the $20M Tropical North Queensland Regional Jobs and Investment Package. Up to 70o ongoing jobs will be delivered through these projects.

Ancient Aboriginal Burial Mounds Identified In Far North Queensland: Thursday 25 January 2018

Our Trust in partnership with Virtus Heritage and Mapoon families have undertaken a research project in the Mapoon area of the Western Cape to investigate and protect Aboriginal Burial Mounds.

The initial GPR investigation of 11 mounds showed many including human interments.

Cape York News Article: Wednesday 13 September 2017

The Cape York News covered the first sod turning for our new administration centre, with a front page picture on Wednesday 13 September 2017. Construction will begin next week and is due to be finished in May next year. This project is poised to be the biggest non-mining development in Weipa since the Nanum shopping complex was built in the 1980s. The site was visited on Tuesday by Elders and Traditional Owners from the region, who gathered with dignitaries from the WTA, Rio Tinto and Napranum for the sod turning ceremony.

Builder Contract Awarded for new Administration Centre

Western Cape Communities Trust has awarded a contract to Far North Queensland Company, Laurie Lindner Constructions to build a new administration Centre in Weipa. The Centre will provide a modern, contemporary space for the Western Cape Communities Trust Administration Team and a meeting place for Traditional Owners that form the Western Cape Communities Trust, the Western Cape Communities Coordinating Committee and the sub-committees that operate under the Western Cape Communities Co-existence Agreement. These Trusts and Committees work to deliver development and employment opportunities, training, community assistance, Community Development and projects that enhance Aboriginal Culture of the Western Cape region.
